The Rising Tide: A dark, atmospheric mystery from bestseller Ann Cleeves, featuring Vera Stanhope, star of ITV's Vera
About this deal
The aging tribe meet at Pilgrims' House to light candles, reminisce over their years together at grammar school, and dine and drink heartily into the night.
Ann's Shetland series bring us DI Jimmy Perez, investigating in the mysterious, dark, and beautiful Shetland Islands. Now a second member of this small group, journalist Rick Keisail has hung himself in his room on the reunion weekend. Auch Ehepartner sind darunter und aus einigen ehemaligen Schülern waren zwischendurch auch mal Ehepartner geworden. Of course it might just be that my favourite is whichever one I've just read, but I have a sense that Anne Cleeves keeps honing her craft, even now that it is at its peak. Vera soon learns that Rick had recently been fired after allegations of sexual misconduct, although he had been very upbeat with his plans for the future on the weekend. But with the latest installments, this Vera still seems someone similar to the tv series one and also separate at times.
I tried to slow down my reading because who knows when or if there will be another Vera book but I couldn't control myself. But there's always the unwelcomed visitor of memory over a tragedy that occured there in their midst so long ago. Forming a close knot group, they decided to have a reunion after five years and then continued meeting every five years, bringing along partners and kids until now they are back more or less to the original core group. Und dennoch ist der ersten Vermutung, dass der Täter aus eben diesem Kreise stammt, nichts entgegenzusetzen. The Rising Tide is published in the UK by Pan Macmillan: the hardback was published on 1st September 2022 (ISBN: 978-1-5098-8961-7), and the paperback on 16th March 2023 (978-1-5098-8965-5).
Every five years the group of friends who had been there gets together to remember Isobel and what they all had had.
This story has so many threads going on, but it is a terrific story, with both a cold case and a new one, that I was totally engrossed in. But what secrets was he about to reveal that would raise the ire in someone so much that murder was the solution? Overweight, disheveled, dowdy Vera resembles a bag lady and is mistaken for a cleaning lady in this story.
