The Bardolino novello was first produced in the late 1980s in a style that mimics the French wine Beaujolais nouveau. Other versions of Bardolino include a Superiore, which has at least 1 extra percent of alcohol and must be aged at least a year before being released, a rosé, known as Bardolino Chiaretto, a lightly sparkling frizzante, and a novello.
The 'power' variation of the quaffable Bardolino classic is the Bardolino superior with its DOCG seal. Montresor Bardolino Bio Organic from the Veneto in Italy is part of Montresor’s new ‘Bio’ range of organic, characterful and contemporary wines – this Bardolino is soft, juicy and versatile. It has a dry and sapid taste, lightly bitter but harmonic and fine, of great quality and sometimes depending on the settling time it could be lightly sparkly. There are over 40 wineries along the Lake Garda Wine Route – the Strada del Vino – which devote themselves to the production of Bardolino. A blend of Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara grapes, the wine is ruby red in colour with purple highlights.
Despite the very gentle extraction here, those fresh red fruit notes are in abundance but lifted even further by a lovely freshness thanks to the coolness of the nights during the growing season. From the hilly shores of Lake Garda, a jewel of northern Italy, on vineyard sites facing the sun giving the fruit a lovely ripeness. The winery was family-owned until 2018 when Montresor was acquired by Cevico, a co-operative group based in Emilia Romagna, with 2 highly regarded Veneto co-ops as co-investors. Elegant and vibrant, it’s deliberately unoaked so you can expect fresh red-fruit flavours with notes of violet and white pepper.
On the other hand, numerous finds dating back to the Roman period such as chalices and other vessels testify to the production of wine in ancient times. The Bardolino DOC can also be found in its “Novello” version; like all young wines, it is produced through carbonic maceration (at least 85%) and it is bottled within the 31th of December of the year. Until then the production of wine followed quantitative rules, thus it had not the quality and variety it has today.
Gaetano Zeni, referred to as Nino by everyone, was the real innovator of the modern era of the winery: a number of small and big changes initiated by him lifted the winery to its level of today.Though the techniques are rooted in tradition, the team also mixes them with the newest trends to keep the quality consistently high. The wine making process occurs by pressing with destemming, a short and cold grapes pre-fermentative maceration. The impact of this was less obvious than in Valpolicella, where the terrain is less variable and vineyard siting is more important. Aside from their low-yield harvests, the quality of these Bardolino wines, especially the 2014 wines, received very high ratings.
