About this deal

The lines between what is and isn’t human blur, as he wrestles with having to do his job and retire all the replicants. Since so much has been written about 'Blade Runner' over the years, its vaulted place in the cinematic pantheon no longer needs any justification, or explanation. It finally got the SD transfer it deserved, but it left me pretty much Blade Runner-ed out for a while. Vangelis' legendary score is at last fully immersive, with select instruments often directed to specific channels instead of the whole thing sounding like sonic mush emanating only from the fronts.

For one thing, I know Blade Runner pretty much backwards at this point, and I can go for a few years without watching it. It's now well-known that Scott and Ford didn't get along, Ford also didn't get along with Young, and both of the film's main producers (and, at times, the studio) didn't get along with the final cut of the movie. There was the "Domestic Cut," the more violent "International Version," the studio edited "Director's Cut" and even a strange "Workprint" edition that mysteriously showed up at a film festival in the early nineties. For the week that ended on February 3rd, Warner Home Entertainment's Blade Runner 2049 stayed on top of the Blu-ray-only media chart. Naturally in 1982, Blade Runner would have been a stereo feature, and it does become clear that the sound design does favour the forward half of the sound stage. Edition' comes with the cool briefcase package, but the 'Complete Collector's Edition' is considerably cheaper, and is a five-star release in its own right.

This would have been the perfect opportunity for some sort of behind the scenes retrospective with cast and crew interviews or even one of the new film's many trailers. A commercial flop upon its original theatrical release in 1982, in the intervening years the film has risen phoenix-like from the ashes, thanks almost entirely to a growing legion of cultists who largely discovered the film on tape and disc. The bonus features package is a huge missed opportunity as it merely recycles previous discs with most of those bonus features appearing only in SD on DVDs.However, because the 1992 cut was lopped together quickly, the editing was a bit clunky and some visual effects inconsistencies from the original remained. All four discs are housed in a 2-disc black UHD case with an identical slip cover with two discs stacked on top of each other. Although it should be said that the Blu-ray does have one stark advantage over the 4K HDR version: it hardly suffers at all with any of the grain I talked about earlier. Today 'Blade Runner' is far more revered and respected than when it was first released twenty-five years ago, and thanks to its fanatical following, it gives 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' a run for its money as the Greatest Cult Film of All-Time. People looking for ‘3D pop’, for hyper-real clarity, for a full-on surround impact are going to be disappointed, but then again, if you’re expecting a 30 year old film.
