About this deal

There’s a handy thread cutter on the side of the machine, saves you constantly reaching for your snips too! For these reasons I would give this machine the lowest score for accessibility as you may need to ask someone for help to use a few of the functions. In comparison to some higher-end machines the options are limited but really these 14 options are all that you need – the only missing stitches would be edge finishing stitches (which you can use zig zag stitch for), eyelets (not really an essential! The machine has a nice simple layout – the only visible dials are the stitch selection dial, the tension setting dial and the backstitch lever.

I don’t have any visual or hand mobility issues, but a needle threader is still a must for me, it can shave five minutes off your prep time and get you sewing quicker! The machine’s built in light is quite dim, I tested the machine during the daytime with my blinds closed to get an idea of the light quality. It’s rare that you would need two spools at the same time though, this would only be useful if you wanted to use a twin needle. Always unplug the machine from the electrical outlet when making any 2 adjustments mentioned in the instruction manual: To unplug the machine, switch the machine to the symbol “O” position to turn it off, • then grasp the plug and pull it out of the electrical outlet.

We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. You need to keep your accessories in the plastic bag provided, or they’ll fall out every time you open the cover. There’s a good distinction between the instructions for winding the bobbin and threading the top half, so you don’t get them confused. You’d need a decent desk lamp when working late at night on this machine (you’d expect to use a lamp late in the evenings with any machine, but I have definitely used machines with brighter lights built in). However, Brother do include an instructional DVD, so there are plenty of ways to learn about the machine if you struggle with the fold-out manual.

X53/X54/X55/X56 XF3656-001 To sew in reverse, push • the reverse sewing lever in as far as possible and hold it in that position while you lightly push the foot controller. For years I've done all my sewing by hand, in the past could never get on with sewing machines but after reading good reviews on this model I thought I'd give it a try.Overall, this is my favorite machine if you’re on a tight budget, but it’s not my favorite one for beginners who love sewing (go here to see my best sewing machine for beginners review). I don’t have any issues with mobility in my hands, but for someone who does, I imagine this would be extremely frustrating.

There is also only one buttonhole stitch option whereas some more advanced machines will have several shapes, but a simple rectangular buttonhole is all you really need, after all they’re usually hidden underneath your buttons! The foot doesn’t grip the fabric enough when you’re sewing multiple layers, so it does wander slightly to the left or right by 1/8″ (3mm). Here’s what I found annoying: the stiff backstitch lever, bad lighting, the thread jumping out of the needle, and the lack of a “normal” manual. There are five stitch length options (for straight stitch), plus left needle position, six zig zig stitch widths and lengths a four-step buttonhole option, blind hem stitch, stretch blind hem stitch and a three step zig zag stitch for attaching elastic.

Quality control isn’t as strict, so manufacturers don’t mind if things don’t fit together tightly, or the metals don’t meet a certain standard. Adjustable upper thread tension gives you complete control over the tension of the upper thread and this tension can be manually adjusted to balance the tension of your stitches. This computerised machine offers 30 stitches (adjustable length and width), a top loading bobbin and is easy to thread.

But I recommend computerized machines for hobby sewists, they have more features that you can grow with. The flat bed attachment is described as a storage compartment in the instructions, but as there is no ‘compartment’ so to speak you will need to put the accessories in another bag inside the compartment to avoid them spilling out when you open it. There is no speed control which can be useful for beginners or even for more advanced sewists when approaching corners/intricate sections. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. Threading guides such as small arrows or numbers marked on the machine make it easier to see how to thread the upper thread, which is especially helpful for beginners.Expand the work area of your sewing machine with an easy to attach, extra wide extension table that is perfect for larger sewing projects. This clever little sewing machine is lightweight and portable, so you can easily stow it away when it’s not in use.
