About this deal

I took the book to this eight year old boy, for I'd been invited by his mother, a dear friend of mine. DK covers everything from animals and the human body, to homework help and craft activities, together with an impressive list of licensing titles, including the bestselling LEGO(R) books. Owen recognized that these reptiles were far different from other known reptiles of the present and the past for three reasons: they were large yet obviously terrestrial, unlike the aquatic ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs that were already known; they had five vertebrae in their hips, whereas most known reptiles have only two; and, rather than holding their limbs sprawled out to the side in the manner of lizards, dinosaurs held their limbs under the body in columnar fashion, like elephants and other large mammals.

I went on to work with Dorling Kindersley on numerous subsequent occasions, both on similar grand encyclopedia-type works and on smaller, dinosaur-focused books. In any case, people could not have been expected to understand what dinosaurs were even if they found their remains. I’d arrive (always later than planned due to constant thwarting by British public transport) and then immediately have to run around like an idiot as I aimed to catch up with correspondence and keep up with all the work. You might be familiar with the Tyrannosaurus Rex and Triceratops, but have you ever seen horse-eating birds and millipedes the size of crocodiles? From Plateosaurus and Velociraptor to Tyrannosaurus rex (T-rex) and Thecodontosaurus, this dinosaur children's book brings your budding palaeontologist face-to-face with these fascinating creatures!Plus points for a more specialised audience include coverage of quite a few obscure animal groups and the well-designed cladograms. Both men collected fossils as an avocation and are credited with the earliest published announcements in England of what later would be recognized as dinosaurs. Whatever, I developed excellent working relationships with the senior editors (Kitty Blount and Maggie Crowley), the various other editors (Kathleen Bada, Rosalyn Thiro, Giles Sparrow and others), art editor Tim Brown, and others. A large herbivore, it may have reared up on its back legs and craned its long neck to browse on vegetation high above the ground. DK's aim is to inform, enrich, and entertain readers of all ages, and everything DK publishes, whether print or digital, embodies the unique DK design approach.

I think it’s fair to say that my getting involved with the Encyclopedia in 2000/2001 really paid off in terms of future work. Registered office address: Unit 34 Vulcan House Business Centre, Vulcan Road, Leicester, Leicestershire, LE5 3EF. The Ultimate Dinosaur Encyclopedia is a whole new type of encyclopedia, developed in conjunction with cutting-edge 3D-art and science. Another thing established early on is that the book lent, in part, on its being authenticated by experts at the American Museum of Natural History in New York.Written by one of the world’s foremost experts on dinosaurs, this award-winning title—honored by the NSTA and the AAAS—is an essential addition to any dinophile’s library, regardless of age! The book is also familiar enough and was sufficiently widely distributed that it has virtually been considered ‘the’ standard popular encyclopedia of prehistoric life for a good swathe of people. Packed full of engaging photography and easy-to-follow text, First Dinosaur Encyclopedia brings history to life. I’ve just discovered – to my surprise – that a US edition isn’t in my library here, but the Italian edition is, and it features the same cover.

The extensive fossil record of genera and species is testimony that dinosaurs were diverse animals, with widely varying lifestyles and adaptations. My wife and I (we were living in a tiny flat at the time) didn’t have internet at home, so I was isolated and unable to deal with jobs and queries when there. On completion of everything (early April 2001), we had a party somewhere close to the DK office (possibly in a DK office, I no longer remember), something that’s not at all typical. dinosaur, (clade Dinosauria), the common name given to a group of reptiles, often very large, that first appeared roughly 245 million years ago (near the beginning of the Middle Triassic Epoch) and thrived worldwide for nearly 180 million years.I’m not the first to note that it may well be directly responsible for the look of the Giganotosaurus that features in the Jurassic World: Dominion prologue. In a report to the British Association for the Advancement of Science in 1841, he described these animals, and the word Dinosauria was first published in the association’s proceedings in 1842. Caption: in devising a cladogram for mammals, it seemed only right to follow Novacek’s (1992) tree, even though new contradictory studies were coming in thick and fast. I had all kinds of ideas on which specific animals and pieces of information should be covered, but we were often constrained based on the images we could get. This would have severely impacted plant life and subsequently brought about the end of most dinosaurs.
