About this deal

Brown had been interviewed for the NME editor’s job, but ended up being offered the chance to make his own magazine instead. I’m reminded of that scene from Spinal Tap where the lead singer is emphasising the need for volume when playing rock ‘n’ roll.

About the Author: James Brown worked on the NME, founded loaded, Jack and Leeds, Leeds, Leeds magazines, and was Editor-in-Chief of British GQ. Loads of Leeds memories and as someone who followed his career, brilliant to get additional insight to the articles I can remember reading. The cocky version of himself that he seemed to want to paint appeared to be bravado to hide a softer side. Suddenly it’s colourful, unabashed reverberations could be felt everywhere, from Chris Evans’ TFI Friday to the newly revamped Radio One.For some people, that’s the equivalent of playing centre forward for their favourite football team, playing lead guitar for their favourite band or being a test driver for your favourite sports car manufacturer. This amount includes seller specified domestic postage charges as well as applicable international postage, dispatch, and other fees. Bookplates are official labels which are signed by the author and then fixed to the title page of the book. Quite often that was because something else had happened in my life in between and, instead of being able to understand how to process that, I would take it out on the next person. Brown left after a couple of years following a murky incident in which Erwin Rommel and the Nazis were included in a feature about the most stylish men of the 20th century.

I’ve never brushed shoulders with royalty and I’d prefer it if the Royal Family invested a lot of their wealth in helping our schools and health service, so no, I don’t think my political outlook has changed since I was down the front of the Redskins or New Town Neurotics at the Hull Trades and Labour club. Overall a very good quality service from this seller and I would not hesitate to recommend this seller. Oasis and Blur were spearheading the Britpop movement, the Premier League / Sky TV partnership had re-packaged football as a shiny tribal leisure option, and Tony Blair’s New Labour were heralding an era of reinvigorated political optimism. It’s about, celebrities, football, drugs, a crisps World Cup, travelling, partying and a dose of self reflection. The book is a tale of incredible highs and plenty of rock ‘n’ roll excess / success, but underpinned with a note of personal tragedy. Occasionally, I slip outside to the fleshpots of Soho to attend a premiere or appear as guest on daytime television. He is the recipient of a National Endowment of the Arts Fellowship in Fiction Writing and the Nelson Algren Award in Short Fiction.

He tells me he’s finished his book, the one about the bloke who started Loaded, who went on tour with U2 and was in a ballet with The Fall, who played football with The Cult, drank liquid acid with the Beastie Boys, and discussed the debatable merits of hot or cold lamb over lunch with Michael Caine. But more concerning for Brown was the sense that living the Loaded lifestyle 24/7 was putting his life in danger. When I arrive, his girlfriend and youngest son are just off for a spot of blackberry picking – what could be more idyllic? Brown's very personal story is as moving as his tales of debauchery whilst running the country's premier 'lads' mag are hilarious.

This might be true, but they couldn’t truly tame the impulsive and occasionally reckless editor they hired. However, such was his impressive track record of sales and industry awards there was no way he wasn’t going to be made an offer to tempt him back into publishing. The Financial Times and its journalism are subject to a self-regulation regime under the FT Editorial Code of Practice. I had expected to not like James whilst reading this book as I had a preconceived idea that he was cocky and egotistical and whilst he does continually refer to himself as both these things throughout the book I rarely saw it reflected in his behaviour. The James Brown I know would rather play keepie-uppies on Filey beach with his small son than go clubbing down the Reeperbahn with Primal Scream.

The readership of GQ increased, James’s salary increased and, perhaps more importantly, his new employer recognised he needed something and was prepared to pay for it.Such was the level of mayhem on this particular jaunt, one of the local travel guides was moved to comment, “I like James very much, but if he behaves in Rio how he has behaved in Sao Paulo he will be raped and murdered”. Brown’s claims that he was “trying to create a magazine that competed with Rolling Stone” are a contrast to the way Loaded was often portrayed at the time: as sexist and moronic.
