About this deal

Originally written as self-therapy, the book stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of guilt the Nazis left behind for future generations. I bought this book having seen the author on a television programme about the family members of the most notorious Nazis.

It is not the authoritative book on Heinrich Himmler but does lend context and perspective on the man. The shame seems understandable from Katrin Himmler's own father's perspective as he is one of the children born to these brothers. He brought his brothers and family down with him and the book shows how self delusion can mask the most horrible of crimes against humanity. She has taken part in several documentary films, like ‘Heinrich Himmler – Portrait of a Mass Murderer’ by Michael Kloft, Germany 2008; ‘Love History’ by Klub Zwei (Simone Bader and Jo Schmeiser), Austria 2010; and ‘Hitler’s Children’ by Chanoch Ze’evi, Israel 2011.

While Heinrich's path led him to unspeakably depraved actions, his brothers and his father believed in the Nazi party, participating without coercion willingly joining the Party and advancing in it without Heinrich's overt aid.You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. What was surprising was the intense nationalism and militarism which permeated German culture as well as the intense pride Germans held for their past. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Katrin Himmler is a freelance author, holding readings and lectures in Germany and abroad, above all for students. Heinrich Himmler's own legitimate daughter does not seem to be ashamed of her heritage - the two illegimate children born to his mistress are wiped from the family tree so it is possible that they never took their father's name.

She is the author of Die Brüder Himmler: Eine deutsche Familiengeschichte, published in English as The Himmler Brothers: A German Family History.

Katrin Himmler’s cool but meticulous examination of the Himmler story reveals – in all its dark complexity – the gulf between the ‘normality’ of bourgeois family life and the horrors perpetrated by one member. As she grew older, Katrin gave her family history a wide berth, but married to an Israeli whose family was confined to the Warsaw Ghetto and with a young, half-Jewish son, she realizes that she cannot evade the past so easily. Writing to Heinrich, Ernst dismissed his usefulness, knowing that he would then be reclassified and deported to a labour camp. Her most disturbing discovery was that her grandfather had directly caused the deportation and death of a Jewish engineer, a Major Schmidt, deputy manager of an engineering firm, who had been protected because of his expertise.
