About this deal

Too late to be admitted to the secret places, too late to be a gentleman crook…" And it must be said that this interest in belatedness raises questions which are, for the admiring reviewer at least, a bit awkward. A machine which, regardless of the varied intentions of everyone ever associated with it, has the potential to kill everyone in the world.

I think I understood what North was trying to do, an attempt to make a thriller something different, using a few different approaches, the serial killer, the brother whose had suffered an attack that colors his whole life, a devoted sister, a professor who sees his death through predestination, a red car, and many characters, settings and my confusion. The very nature of the tales, which are more preoccupied with what happens next rather than with the emotional background of said characters. After phoning a friend, it's quick trip through underground London (literally and figuratively), which segues from the the current situation to three days ago and then deeper into Joe's past. I'm going to be very brief and vague on the synopsis because trust me, the less you know going into this one the better. He likes: oceans, mountains, lakes, valleys, and those little pigs made of marzipan they have in Switzerland at new year.Joe Spork, the narrator, is expected to be a criminal extraordinaire like his father, but he rejects this legacy. Do you believe in coincidence or do you believe that every event is connected and not just happenstance but meant to have specific meaning to solving the puzzle? Harkaway does an excellent job of giving each character (some of whom you can see in the book trailer above) a unique voice. It seemed like the author tried to be too smart with the twist, philosophy (think Laplace’s demon), and story.

In the year 2000 when he was a young boy, he was attacked by a man, Michael Hyde who was driving a red car.Alex North pens a most mysterious mystery that had me riveted from the start but, as I mentioned, it took some time for me to wrap my brain around everything. She is a teenage boy fantasy girlfriend who is beautiful and witty, loves sex, but conveniently has no actual personality, so that she could fall in love with the narrator, no questions asked. My verdict on this book is that I wanted to like it more than I did because I think Alex North tried too hard to top his other books. When she is close she sees the individual elements, but when she stands back she sees the big picture. There were also two Detectives, Caroline Pettifer and Laurence Page, who were involved in a few cases throughout this story as well.
