The entry for the Vesta class from the 1954 edition of Blake’s “Holiday’s Afloat” brochure can be seen on the left.

That land was redeveloped in recent years and that pillbox has been preserved, now sitting at the end of Oaks Lea on the Springfield housing estate (picture above). What makes the book rather special, and very different to other brochures of the era, was that Graham Bunn obviously fancied himself as a bit of a poet.

During the 1930s, Herbert Woods had been at the forefront of holiday boating on the Broads, with his innovative motor cruiser design and sleek sailing craft, he was a true pioneer of the modern boat hire industry.

The colourisation has beautifully highlighted the spread on the saloon table – bread and jam and some rather nice looking fruit cake. A portable bath was included in the hire, although electric light was optional and would require the payment of an additional 7 shillings and sixpence a week or 12/6 for a fortnight. Gray Malkin was one of several ex admiralty craft which were repurposed for use on the Norfolk Broads after the Second World War, the most famous of which was probably the Fairmile B “Golden Galleon” which ran passenger trips from Great Yarmouth between the early 1950s and the 1990s and became a familiar sight crossing Breydon Water. Originally operated by the Navy, it was later taken over by the Army and became part of the Army’s Navy. The original photographs have been individually scanned, remastered and put back on the pages as they were not the greatest quality, but they are at least now viewable.Of course, Mr and Mrs Newstead (front), who I think lived on Tunstead Road and often dropped in after retirement. Whilst boating holidays have been attracting holidaymakers to the Norfolk Broads since the Victorian era, hotels, boarding houses, riverside bungalows and apartments have also accommodated their fair share visitors over the years. Archie is pictured here on the right, holding the dog, whilst Donald is seen with his arms around the shoulders of another two members of the group.
