And even the most pacifist-minded of dads can see that the military metaphor works surprisingly (and entertainingly) well. Six years as an army commando didn't prepare Neil Sinclair for the minefield of bringing up his children. The NCT has a list of 10 things everyone should know about postnatal depression in dads: https://www. They caught the Glen Tilt (it was ferrying men of fighting age to the mainland to sign up) to Weymouth , from where they were taken to Portland Barracks. Being a man and therefore having an intrinsic obsession with everything army related, this book stood out from the rest of the significantly more formal books on my pre-birth reading list.

Commando Dad – Basic Training by Neil Sinclair is a reference book covering all aspects of caring for a child from birth to three years. I have read it from start to finish in preparation and just feel there are better books out there for this purpose. There is nothing more off-putting than picking up a book that is 4 inches thick and has tiny writing. Now I know what readers are probably thinking, “Those military types are a close-knit bunch and this is probably a plug for one of their mate’s books”. Designed to be used in the field from birth to 12 months, this resource provides the foundation to all the practical skills needed to become the ultimate protector to your newest trooper. Like I say, it was the army theme that drew me to the book to begin with – rest assured it isn’t just the name of the book and the cover that is themed like this!

Using genuine and faux military slang makes the book a touch more fun and keeps things light-hearted for potentially stressed readers. The advice, approved by healthcare professionals, is quick to read, easy to understand and simple to digest, delivered in short, unambiguous bullet points and, no-nonsense rules - and, pretty unarguably, spot on.

Any dad in a rush or who doesn’t have the patience or desire to read hundreds of pages can still get the answers they need.

It demystifies pregnancy and childbirth; provides the essential back-up information men need to support their partners and prepares them for the radical changes to their life that a new BT (baby trooper) will inevitably bring. Brief your troopers on how to safely handle mini-beasts and make sure they know to ask permission before doing so as to ensure they don’t pick up anything that could bite or sting. I can honestly tell you that there have been few times in my life as daunting as bringing my first son back from the hospital. I have no previous experience with babies, so to say I knew fuck all about looking after them is an understatement!

It’s much more complex, based on an individual’s experience, psychology and history which come into play on top of the stresses of being a new parent. It is hard when you’re going through problems that you don’t feel like you can share with anyone else.

Written by ex-Commando and father of three Neil Sinclair, this no-nonsense guide will teach you everything you need to know to prepare for your biggest mission yet: parenthood. These make the whole dad thing so much more accessible for people like me who don’t have the actual experience of having a child yet. If you’re not a confident parent, your child won’t be content, as he or she won’t be reliably changed, fed, bathed, burped and rested. The family later came back to Blighty and Sinclair became primary carer for the couple's two children, followed by a third (born during a specially planned trip to New York so that she, like her siblings, could have dual nationality). My family eats home cooked dinners most nights (and as my wife and I are both out working, this is mainly thanks to a bumper cooking session on a Sunday) and yet I spend less than almost any one I know for food.
